You may have heard of buildings settling as they age - you may have even witnessed this first hand. Over time, buildings tend to sink into the ground. Unfortunately, the entire structure rarely settles uniformly. More often than not, one part of the building will sink more than the other leading to sections of the building sitting at different heights. You might notice over time that doors and cabinets no longer close properly. A door might not latch completely closed or cabinet doors might start to collide with one another. This is frequently because the two sides of the door frame are no longer level with one another or because of the cabinet doors are out of alignment. There are two common fixes that I use when this happens.
If the offset of a door is small, hinge spacers are sometimes enough to realign the door with the frame. Spacers serve two purposes. The first is to readjust the distance between the door and the frame. The second is to angle the door relative to the door frame, subsequently raising or lowering the latch relative to the jamb in the door frame. Changing the angle or the spacing between the door and the frame might get it to latch properly, but it could also cause interference problems - the door might start to rub against the frame in some areas. When this happens, I remove material from the door so that it no longer contacts the frame as it opens or closes.

If the misalignment is larger, I frequently relocate door latches and door jambs or reposition cabinet door hinges and latches to realign them.

You may not think much of it when your doors close properly, but if you've ever had to deal with doors that don't properly close, you'll soon realize just how satisfying it is when the door no longer rubs on the frame and you hear that crisp click as it comes to a stop.
Your house may settle, but you certainly don't need to. It's my goal to make sure your house looks and feels great no matter how long it has been. Time flies and things change, but your house can certainly stand the test of time and weather the storm if properly cared for. Reach out to me and let me know how I can help you keep your home in pristine shape. I would be happy to serve you.
