In Colorado, we're fortunate enough to have decent quality water coming from our taps. Even so, it's often nice to drink water that you know is filtered. Not many homes come with built-in filters, so that's something that often needs to be added. It's a rather simple process it can be rather intimidating for those who aren't familiar with it.
The first step is to drill a hole into the sink or counter for the dispenser. Second, install the filter under the sink. Finally, the proper plumbing must be added.
The hole for the dispenser can simply be drilled using a hole saw. Drilling a hole through a wood or laminate counter is rather simple. When drilling through a stainless steel sink, it is important to use a slower speed and to keep the surface cool. A higher speed won't necessarily get you through the steel any faster - just let the blade do the work, and heating up the steel will harden the material, making it harder to cut through. You can simply put a little water on the surface as coolant to keep the temperature lower. Once the hole is cut, the dispenser can be installed.

Mount the filter assembly to a solid structure under the sink. Thinner or more flexible materials may not be strong enough to support the weight of the filter and the water inside. A solid wood surface or other strong material is preferred.

Before you start routing the plumbing, turn off the cold water supply by turning the knob under the sink. You can turn the faucet on at this point to eliminate any pressure that may have built up in the line. With the cold water valve closed, disconnect the line that runs to the sink. Install a t-fitting so that the original line can run to the faucet as usual and another line can be routed to the filter. Route the line that comes out of the filter assembly to the dispenser on the sink or countertop. Be sure to get the right size lines and fittings.

You're almost there! Before you get too excited, open the cold water valve slowly and inspect the lines under the sink for any leaks. If you notice any leaks, immediately close the cold water valve again and address any issues that you may see. If there are no leaks, go ahead and pour yourself a nice glass of filtered water and celebrate your win!
